Obama's Nobel Peace Prize

Obama is coming to Norway this Thursday to deliver the acceptance speech for his Nobel Peace Prize– just 9 days after he made the decision to escalate the war in Afghanistan. Many Norwegians are angry about Obama’s war decision and that Obama would skip many Nobel traditional events including lunch with Norwegian King. Estimated 5000 war protesters are awaiting Obama in Oslo. Many people said that the Nobel committee members have decided to give Obama this prize because they want to 1) shame Bush, and 2) drive Obama out of illegal war policies. But I think they failed both. First, they failed because Bush and the Bush administration, as all of us, view the prize with great skepticism and disdain. In addition, Bush already has had enough bad reputations so the world does not need this prize to spite him. Second, they failed because Obama does not have enough political courage to separate him from political interest. Political interest has taken and will take him down the road.

I ditto my friend’s comment: Obama getting a Nobel Peace Prize is similar to Paris Hilton getting an award from the Pope for her virginity.

Be fair with Obama: His election as US-President has motivated many people around the world. I think alone for this reason he is eligible for the Nobel Prize.
The war, yes, the war. What could he do? If he decided to end the US-engagement in Afghanistan, many poeple would say, he did it because of the Prize. And exactly this is false and fatal for a politician.

I disagree, getting people inspired by powerful politician is something I consider fairly dangerous as there is nothing more obscure than what these people did to become powerful. Especially when the figure is also put to celebrity status, and even given prize for that, it is essential to be critical to prevent the "he can do no wrong" thing ( and all the nonsense of "if he did, it's because he could not do otherwise"). Politician should be painted truthfully as they are: creatures who strive for power and will do anything to get there and more importantly, stay there ... until another kick them out. And while they're there to do the job, why can't we criticize them? They're paid and we are the one who pay.

Marcus: you are right but we still need to put a check on him.

Talking of inspiration reminds me of Sarah Palin. She inspires millions of American- just a shame.

I disagree again about Sarah Palin. If she were in office with Obama :), the policy would have been basically the same but the scene would have been much more interesting, sort of Hollywoodian ideal with a superhero and the blond, definitely more interesting than seeing Michelle growing vegetable. As for Vice-President job, when was the last time we heard about Joe Biden? The beer party, yes, Palin could do that. She could do even better, for example inspiring so many comedians and TV shows. Think of what we may have missed (sigh)...

HA. Haha, she inspires comedians because she is nut. I cant stand her ideas because they are all crazy and stupid.

After hearing his speech at the Nobel Prize Ceremony, I'm done. American is always American. War for Peace? What the f*!

American is always American but the war is not for peace. Soldiers are in Afganistant, Iraq don't think that.
