“For the gay and lesbian community in this country, I think it's clear that they feel victimized in fairly powerful ways and they're often hurt by not just certain teachings of the Catholic Church, but the Christian faith generally. And as a Christian, I'm constantly wrestling with my faith and my solicitude and regard and concern for gays and lesbians.”

I am not surprise at all as I’ve never had confidence in Obama that he would make progress for social justice issues including abortion and gay rights. He's been considered liberal but he's too religious and now he stands right in the center – a typical centrist democrat. “And as a Christian, I'm constantly wrestling with my faith and my solicitude and regard and concern for gays and lesbians”. This is so so disappointing. How could he let his personal belief interfere with his roles as a president?
I believe there would be no big money from gay community for Obama’s 2012.

Why is it disappointing? He just said the truth.
He said he wrested with his faith, meaning nothing would be done. (And he has proved this in the last few months. He has issued some offensive memos to the gay community). He seems worry that he might upset the Church and care only about his future career rather than making progress. His personal belief and his duties as a president are different. I find his message backward.
But Lung, would you prefer he alienate the people who don't accept gay marriage? I think it's better to persuade than to alienate. It's more satisfying to get a "quick fix", but meaningful change doesn't usually happen that way.
I don’t think gay marriage is going to happen federally in this country so I really don’t debate this. The above message is just an example of how his faith influences his policies on social issues. There are other issues that he promised during his campaign but now he totally ignores or even carelessly brought them down. He can’t persuade those conservative and he does not need to do so. That why we need a president. That why we need a Supreme Court. In addition, the Reps now really don’t care about those issues much and thus now is the good time for his administration to drop some backward bills. But his administration doesn’t care. Many people voted for him as the only choice they had, as liberals, and now I think they are all regret and angry. My hope was in Hillary to address these issues, not Obama, and I strongly believe it would never be placed on Obama.
Typically Obama, and typically politician at work!
HA: I agree. He is very good at pleasing both sides.
The Church is not going to give big money to liberals i.e. Obama. Money from his last year campaign came significantly from small donors.
I must lol by seeing this: http://pix.sueddeutsche.de/politik/641/480125/dpap4gr-1247251451.jpg
Are they my Obama and Michelle?
Come back to my opinion: Obama represents the typical Christian regarding the issue of homosexuality. So I think he said the truth. I can hear a hidden criticism inside his speech above. Of course I would have expected a more liberal position of Obama on this issue.
